Mall Rats Quiet the Blowhards
(Olympia, WA) - The Capitol Mall Rats made a statement to
the rest of the league this weekend stomping the Blowhards 109-79 to move into first place in the CFFL's Central
Division. The win is the first in the history of the team's
brand new, state-of-the-art, downtown stadium, Banana
Republic Field.
The Mall Rats continue their history of outstanding
production from the wide receiver position. The receivers
busted the game wide open by scoring 63 points. The Rats
were led by Marvin Harrison who broke out of his early
season slump by scoring three touchdowns en route to a 33
point performance one week removed from being called out for
his mediocre play by coach Brandon Sparks. Chad Johnson and
rookie Charlie Rogers added 18 and 12 points respectively
for good measure.
"We had a lot of guys step up this week especially our
receiving corps," said Sparks to the media following the
game. "With (David) Boston suspended we needed a big game
from Chad and Charlie and both of them came up huge."
The Mall Rats also got surprising production from their
running backs. Amos Zereoue scored 15 points and Kevan
Barlow had 7. On the bench T.J. Duckett surprised with 12
points and Corell Buckhalter scored another 8.
"If we can get some quality production out of this group of
runners we are going to be in great shape," said Sparks.
"T.J. and Corell both look like they will be taking over
full-time very soon."
The Blowhards were led by kicker Mike Vanderjagt's 17 points
and the Redskins defense with 13. Their heralded receivers
only managed 17 points in the game.
The Mall Rats hit the road next weekend to take on Central
division rival Cheap Trick. 2002 Orange Julius Mall Rat of
the Year Terrell Owens and Troy Hambrick make their first
appearances against the Mall Rats since leaving town
following last season.
