The Capitol Mall Rats Story...
The former CFFL franchise the Miami Vice had laid dormant for many years while owner Brandon Sparks pursued other interests. But in 2002 the Vice franchise was reborn and rechristened the Capitol Mall Rats following a name the team contest in which names like the Olympia Blowholes, Olympia Artesians, Thurston County Cascades, Budd Bay Oyster Shooters and the Capitol Bing Bangs were all submitted. The Capitol Mall Rats was selected because of it's the owners wanted this team to be representative of the entire region and it's reference to local culture and history.
Quarterback Kurt Warner became the first player to be selected by the new Mall Rats franchise during the 2002 CFFL draft. Warner was injured early in the season and Drew Bledsoe and Chad Pennington eventually shared the duties at quarterback.
Second round pick Terrell Owens racked up 1300 yards and 13 touchdowns and was given the 2002 Orange Julius Mall Rat of the Year Award. The Hot Topic Breakout Player of the Year Award was presented to Runningback Travis Henry, a fifth round pick who rushed for 1438 yards and 13 touchdowns.
The Mall Rats made the Playoffs in their inaugural season and took on the rival Seattle Slugs in the wild card matchup but were defeated 155-94. The Mall Rats promise even more excitement for the 2003 season. Stay tuned as we make even more history!
